THE rookie draft appears the best hope for a group of young footballers who missed out on selection in last night’s AFL draft to make the big time next season.
Sale trio Will Hams, Josh Cashman and Shannen Lange and Maffra’s Jack Johnstone and Kaine Allen were considered chanced to be selected by an AFL club, but missed out despite good seasons with Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup.
Despite making the grand final, only two Power players were chosen, captain Tim Membrey went to Sydney with pick 46, while TAC Cup best-and-fairest Nick Graham was chosen by Carlton with selection 54. Both players are from the Traralgon area.
Players who missed out on selection can still make an AFL list for next season when the pre-season and rookie drafts are held on December 11. Players selected in the pre-season draft will be full-time members of a club list, while rookies can only be elevate to the main list if a player retires or has a long-term injury.
