RAIN ruined any chance of a result in the Gippsland Cricket League match between Sale-Maffra and Central Gippsland at the College Oval on Sunday.
The home side, in its first game of the season after a round one bye, had the ascendancy with Central Gippsland at 3-124 after 42 of 50 overs when the rain fell, ending the contest.
Mitch Floyd, Mark Nicholls and Mick Jones took a wicket each for Sale-Maffra, while Aidan Vesty scored 52 and Andrew Philip 34 for Central Gippsland.
THE match between Bairnsdale and Traralgon was set for a thrilling finish before rain fell at Wy Yung.
Scott Davidson took 5-29 as Bairnsdale bowled Traralgon out for 177 with Ben Marks (57) and Jason Macfarlane (45) top-scoring.
In reply Bairnsdale continued to lose wickets on a regular basis with Hayden Erfurth (32) and Scott Davidson (22) offering the most resistance. However time ran out for the visitors and Bairnsdale finished on 8-141 after 41 overs meaning the match ended in a draw.
Tom Shippen bowled well for Traralgon, capturing 3-14.
Bairnsdale has maintained second place on the ladder and it appears Traralgon’s chance of making the final may have been washed away.
IN the only senior match completed, Warragul was too good for Alberton.
After being sent into back, Jason Croft (61) and Brad Wadlan (56) achieved a great start with some impressive stroke play for Warragul. Daniel Hamilton followed up his first round century with another fine knock of 53 before the home team was dismissed for 283 off 48.2 overs.
Alberton was always going to struggle to chase down such a large total and was all out for 129 off 34 overs. Taylor Reid was the only batsman to offer any real resistance, finishing with 52.
Chris Savage and Dale Weller took three wickets each for Warragul, who moved to the top of the ladder.
HARRY Thackray scored 109 to help Sale-Maffra’s under 18 team defeat Bairnsdale at Maffra.
