Tight at the top in bowls

EVERY match has become a “mini final” for the top five teams in North Gippsland bowls section one.

On Saturday, third-placed Yarram Gold went down by one shot to Stratford in a cliffhanger, while Maffra came from behind to win at Sale Golf, finishing very strong after the break.

Sale White was too strong for Heyfield, who now sits in fifth spot, while Sale Blue had a narrow three-shot win over Yarram Green.

Heyfield consolidated third spot in section two with a good win over Yarram, while Rosedale was too strong for Stratford, Maffra won well at Wurruk and Sale Blue was too good for Sale Golf.

Sale Blue leads the way in section three after their good win over Sale Golf. Sale White was too good for Rosedale and Heyfield and Maffra fought out a close game with Heyfield winning by one shot, while Yarram forfeited its match against Stratford.

This Saturday’s round will be the final one before the Christmas break.

SALE’S Matthew Higgins has continued is great season, winning the Gippsland section of the state under 25 singles at Sale Golf Club on Sunday.

Higgins defeated Bruthen bowler Matthew Hooten 25-6 to move into the final 16 in Victoria to play in the finals at Yallourn Bowls Club on January 20.
