Wellington athletes dominate shield event

Wellington athletes dominated round one of the Vern Curnow Shield at the Joe Carmody Athletic Track, Newborough on December 18.

Promising middle distance juniors Alyssa Waugh, Millie Dunnett, Jesse Mayne and Erika Allen all finished in the top four of the girls’ junior 3000 metres. Jake Holland took out the boys’ event in a time of 11:29 minutes, while Kieran Hennig came second.

Impressive 12-year-old Hailey Armstrong produced the fastest time of the night in the 100m, 13.54 seconds.

Grace Walker jumped her personal best of 4.28m in the girls’ under 14 long jump and looks set to be a contender in the 2013 Victorian country titles, to be held in Geelong.

Other good performances came from Lachlan Craft, 12.98s in the boys’ under 14 100m, Sarah Gardiner and Ashley Jans, who produced solid performances in the 100m and 400m.

Round two of the Vern Curnow Shield will be held on January 8 at Newborough.
