SALE-Maffra began Country Week with victory over Gippsland Cricket League premier Leongatha yesterday.
It was a case of third time lucky for the Sharks, who had lost their past two matches against Leongatha, including the GCL final.
The Sharks posted a competitive 7-223 at Dandenong with Mike Jones making 56 and Jayden Allison 53 not out. This duo put on 64 for the sixth wicket.
Dylan Bolton added valuable runs at the end of the innings, unbeaten on 28.
Leongatha’s cause was not helped when opening bowler Alan Jenkins was removed from the attack for running on the centre of the pitch.
The Sharks bowled Leongatha out for 181 in the 49th over. Dylan Clark made 35 and Eli Richards 33.
Sharks captain Matt Dowsett took 3-49, Matt Turnbull 2-14, Simon Williams 2-30 and Taylor Tatterson 2-35.
Forced to bat one over to complete the day, Sale-Maffra made the most of it, smashing 22 runs for the loss of one wicket. Josh Rurawhe hit sixes off both balls he faced, while Dowsett scored 10 off four balls, including one four and a six.
Sale-Maffra will play Ballarat at Glen Waverley today.
