LATROBE Valley Baseball Association finished the state winter championships in Geelong in fifth place.
The Latrobe Valley squad, which included Sale Rangers Will Hector and James Jackson, began on Saturday with a 10-5 loss to Diamond Valley, who scored seven runs in the first inning.
The side then lost to Dandenong 11-1, with seven of the winner’s runs not coming until the seventh and final inning.
On Sunday, Latrobe Valley opened its account with a 9-4 win over Bendigo which saw Latrobe Valley finish third in its group and advance to division one.
Despite taking the lead with a run in the first innings, Latrobe Valley lost its division one semi-final to Dandenong 8-2. Six runs in the sixth inning provided Latrobe Valley too great a mountain to climb in the final innings.
In the play-off for fifth place, Latrobe Valley defeated North-Eastern 6-1.
Traralgon’s Luke Horntsra was named in the Latrobe Valley’s most valuable player for the championships.
Ringwood won the event for the second successive year, defeating Diamond Valley in the final.
The regular LVBA competition resumes this Sunday with the Sale Rangers travelling to Traralgon and Moe-Newborough hosting Churchill.
