IN ideal weather, Wellington Cycling Club recently held its annual club time trial championship on the familiar Newry circuit with more than 20 riders taking on the “race of truth”.
Dave Arnup having already won the road, criterium and hillclimb championship in 2013 was looking to make a clean sweep of events in A grade for this year.
With only a slight headwind to contend with it over the 20 kilometre flat circuit, fast times were expected.
A variety of time trial equipment was on show with all riders trying to gain the ultimate aero advantage and give them that extra edge.
Racing began under the leadership of club stalwart Mike Renehan with riders hitting the bitumen at 30 second intervals, each trying to catch the rider in front.
Arnup managed to ride a strong second half of his race for the win the A grade title to top off an outstanding gland slam for 2013. Craig Keane showed himself to be a real threat for next year taking second with Simon Whitford putting in another solid ride for third.
B grade was won by new rider Clint Glover with the consistent Shannon Nash second and another new rider, Josh Rivers, third.
The consistent Darryl Ryan won the C grade title with club president Kevin Read coming second and Gary Cotterill third.
This Sunday, the club will race at Tinamba from 9am. New riders are welcome.
