Sale women undefeated in hockey

SALE has gone through the East Gippsland women’s hockey home-and-away season undefeated after winning a tight match against second-placed Swan Reach 2-1.

Emily Carrolan and Mikayla Colley were Sale’s goal scorers, while Sarah Grixti scored for Swan Reach.

Sale will have the bye in the final round this weekend.

Maffra defeated Bairnsdale 11-0 with four goals from Caitlin Frisina, two from Kate Steinmann and one each from Ainsley Butcher, Kate Ingram, Emily Mogridge, Meg Mogridge and Kate O’Toole.

Orbost kept open the possibility of claiming fourth spot with a 5-0 win over Wellington. Narelle McAlister scored two goals, while Molly Coulton, Elly Smith and Molly Welsh added one each.

The Wellington players wore rainbow socks as part of its Fair Go Sports promotion, actively taking a stand against racism, violence and bullying in sport.

IN the men’s, Bairnsdale show class in the second half to defeat Maffra 6-1 at home.

Maffra threatened to cause a surprise when the teams went into half-time on one goal each, however, the home side lifted in the second half. Eddie Long, Zach Coulton and Ry Mutimer scored two goals each for Bairnsdale, while Shannon Francis scored his first goal for Maffra.

Bairnsdale’s win keeps it in touch of fourth spot. In an exciting climax to the home-and-away season, Bairnsdale could take fourth place on Saturday if it can defeat top team Orbost.

Orbost went back to top spot with a convincing 10-0 win over Wellington. Brendan Coulton scored four goals, Phil Neville three with one each from Mitchell Eaton, Jason Lavell and Paul Lavell.

Swan Reach consolidated third spot with a tight 2-1 win over fourth-placed Sale. Toby Anderson and Simon Murrell scored for Swan Reach, Jason Slattery scored Sale’s goal.

ON Saturday, Maffra will host Swan Reach, Bairnsdale will travel to Orbost and Nagle will host Wellington. Sale will have a bye.
