IN the shock of round 14 in East Gippsland women’s hockey, Maffra defeated second-placed Swan Reach 3-2 at home.
Caitlin Frisina scored two goals and Emily Mogridge one for Maffra, while Shana Snell scored both Swan Reach goals.
Having struggled all season to stay in contact with top two sides Sale and Swan Reach, Maffra only missed out on finishing the home-and-away season in second place on goal difference only.
Nagle made its fourth placing safe with a convincing 13-0 home win over Wellington. Mikayla Blackshaw scored four goals and Fiona Morrison two with one each from Annelise Allen, Holly Bowden, Maddy Bowden, Megan Brill, Isobella McArthur, Amber Willowhite and Nadine Phillip.
Orbost finished the season on an upbeat note with a 4-1 win over Bairnsdale. Stef Coote scored two goals with one each from Narelle McAlister and Elly Smith, while Taryn Haylock scored for the visitor.
ORBOST, Nagle and Swan Reach consolidated their top three positions on the men’s ladder.
Top team Orbost put an end to Bairnsdale’s finals chances with a 3-0 win. C. Martin scored two goals and M. Irvine scored one.
Third-placed Swan Reach also had a three-goal win over Maffra. Matthew Cunningham scored two goals and Simon Murrell one.
Nagle, in second, was relentless in its 17-goal victory over Wellington. Bryan Smith, Hugh Grant, Ren Crunden-Smith, and Oscar Crunden-Smith scored three goals each, Shane Bartlett and Jack Bowden two each and Lachlan Bartlett one.
SALE, who finished on top of the women’s ladder and fourth in the men’s, had the bye.
THE semi-finals will be played tomorrow at Bairnsdale.
In the under 13s, Nagle will play Maffra and Bairnsdale will take on Sale.
The under 15 finals see Bairnsdale playing Maffra and Nagle playing Sale.
In the under 18s, Nagle will meet Bairnsdale and Maffra will play Orbost.
The women’s semi-finals will be between Sale and Swan Reach, and Maffra and Nagle.In the men’s, Orbost will meet Nagle and Swan Reach will play Sale.
