Maffra to light up in 2014

TWO night games have tentatively been scheduled for the Maffra Recreation Reserve for the 2014 Gippsland League football season.

If works to install the improved lighting, which is underway, are completed in time, the Eagles will host Traralgon on June 17, the same night Sale will be playing at Bairnsdale under lights, and Leongatha on July 5.

Leongatha agreed to play the late game at Maffra in deal which will see Parrots host the Eagles on Anzac Day, which will fall on a Friday next year. It will be one of two matches on the public holiday, with Warragul to host Bairnsdale.

Maffra will begin the season on April 5 at home against Moe, which will be coached by Eagles premiership player Adrian Burgiel. It will also be Wayne Butcher’s first game in charge of the Eagles since 2005.

Sale will begin with a trip to Traralgon.

The “Battle of Birds” clashes between Sale and Maffra will take place on June 1 (at Sale) and August 10 (Maffra).

Sale will have to wait until round nine, June 14, to meet grand final conqueror Morwell at home.

With nine games scheduled for Saturday nights, nine on Sundays and three on public holidays, including the Queen’s Birthday clash between Morwell and Traralgon, only four of the 18 rounds next year will have all its matches played on a Saturday afternoon.

The preliminary and grand finals could again be played on Sundays, with the fixture listing the preliminary final for September 13 or 14 and the premiership decider on September 20 or 21.

The Gippsland League will travel to Bendigo for the AFL Victoria Country Championships on May 24.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed Woodside will host Yarram on Good Friday, April 18.

The match will be first time the two local rivals have met in a competitive fixture.

Yarram will move to the North Gippsland league from next year after successfully appealing to AFL Victoria Country to leave the Alberton league.

Previously, Yarram had played Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron-Woodside on Easter Sunday.
