Sharks stay in GCL final race

DESPITE a comfortable victory over Traralgon, Sale-Maffra will need to defeat Central Gippsland to have any hope of making the Gippsland Cricket League final.

The win moved the Sharks into third position on the ladder, equal on points with second-placed Warragul and six behind top side Bairnsdale.

The Sharks will play bottom side Central Gippsland this Sunday at Yallourn North.

At Sale Oval last Sunday, Sale-Maffra bowled Traralgon out for 130 to set-up its victory.

Opening bowlers Michael Cafferkey and Ben Howes claimed 3-25 and 3-26 respectively, while Simon Williams recorded 2-16. Traralgon captain and former Victoria and Western Australia player Brad Knowles scored 58.

Daniel Bedggood gave the Sale-Maffra innings some stability, scoring 57 off 60 balls with captain Matt Dowsett, 36 from 26, helping the home side push toward victory.

The Sharks passed the Traralgon total with four wickets to spare before Sam Bedggood, 42, Ben Channing 23, and Nathan Massey, 22 not out, pushed the final score to 213.

Matt Golding claimed four wickets for Traralgon.

In other senior matches, Bairnsdale defeated Central Gippsland, and Warragul was too strong for Leongatha.

SALE-Maffra booked a place in the under 18 final with victory against Traralgon at Stephenson Park.

Tom Love scored 55 and Adam Diamond 37 as the Sharks finished on 7-198. Jacob Westland took four wickets for the visitor.

Traralgon was bowled out for 172 with Dylan Rowley claiming three wickets.

This Sunday, Sale-Maffra will play Central Gippsland at Mirboo North.

The team bus will be leaving the Sporting Legends car park at 7.45am sharp.
