Eagles face Blue Devils in finals

THE Maffra Eagles will head to Churchill to play the unbeaten Blue Devils on Saturday night for a place in the Country Basketball League Gippsland women’s grand final.

The Eagles qualified for the finals after winning seven of their 12 matches.

The Blue Devils won both meetings against the Eagles this season, a strong second quarter helping them win 89-71 at Maffra in the Eagles’ first match of the season and 69-61 at home in round six after scores were level at half-time.

Tip-off is 6pm at Latrobe Leisure Churchill.

In the other semi-final, Korumburra will host Traralgon from 7pm on Saturday.

THE men’s top four was finalised last weekend with Bairnsdale unable to move up the ladder after a 90-61 loss at home to Korumburra.

Bairnsdale began strongly with a 20-12 opening term but the Wildcats turned the game around with Joel Winderlich and Dylan Heylen leading the way, combining for 28 first half points. They continued their impressive scoring display in the second half to notch their third win of the season.

Heylen scored 28 points and Winderlich 25.

The result meant Moe retained fourth spot and a semi-final at Churchill against the undefeated minor premier on Saturday night from 8pm. It also meant Sale finished the season in fifth place, a win outside the top four.

Warragul will host Traralgon in Saturday night’s other semi-final from 7pm.
