A FOURTH-placed finish from Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club’s Boats ‘N’ Hoes under 23 women’s crew helped Victoria to a fourth-placed finish overall in the Interstate Surf Boat Championship held at Stockton, Newcastle.

Damaging their boat after tipping over in the heats in rough conditions on Saturday, the Seaspray crew used Jan Juc’s boat in the finals and got off to a bad start, finishing fourth overall.

Racing for individual honours in the Australian open on Sunday, the crew was unable to qualify for the finals but finished in the top 20 in its age group from the 45 boats competing.

The crew, Emily Olssen, Sarah Cotterill, Chelsea Rawnson, Gracie Cartwright and sweep Joe Bergin, who replaced the unavailable Glen Lazzaro, performed well against quality crews.

Rawnson said the girls enjoyed rowing against crews they had never come against before.

The Seaspray crew will be training at its home beach this weekend in preparation for the state championships at Ocean Grove over the Labour Day long weekend in March.
