Footy clubs finalising lists

WITH less than a month until the beginning of the local football season, clubs are busy finalising their lists.

The North Gippsland season, expanded to 20 rounds because of the addition to Yarram, will begin on March 29.

The Gippsland League will begin its season on April 5.

The East Gippsland season begins on Good Friday, April 18, though round one won’t be complete until April 26.


KEEN to make amends for last year’s grand final shocker, Sale will lose players this season to VFL commitments.

Shannen Lange, who played three senior matches last year when his commitments with VFL permitted, has re-signed with the VFL club, while Ryan Pendlebury has been training with Collingwood’s VFL side.

Luke Collins, the 2012 league best-and-fairest, has joined the Richmond VFL list.

If their VFL sides are not playing, they could return to the Sale line-up.

While he had signed with Bendigo for this season, Tom Hams could return to Sale after receiving a clearance to play when the VFL is out of action.

John Gooch and Josh Kennedy will return to the Magpies after a season at Boisdale-Briagolong.

The Magpies have also recruited Tye Morrison from Stratford.

The Burgiel brothers, Hayden and Adrian, are the main losses so far for preliminary finalist Maffra.

The coach of the past two seasons, Hayden will coach Sale City this year, while Adrian will take the reigns at Gippsland League rival Moe.

Premiership coach Wayne Butcher is returning to the lead the team, which will have Michael Coleman returning from Ballarat and the addition of forward Brad Caldwell from Rosedale.

Having predominantly played with Gippsland Power in recent years, Lachlan Channing has been cleared back to his original club Stratford.

Among other clearances away pending Matt Lee and Glenn Semmens to Boisdale-Briagolong and Ryan Foat and Jack Doderico to Woodside.

Among other Gippsland League clubs, Warragul has lost Matt Gray and Clinton Rowe to Ellinbank league clubs, but gained Brad Scalzo from Eastern league powerhouse Noble Park.

Tim Johnston will return to Traralgon from Cowwarr, and will be joined by Jordan Bourke.

North Gippsland

PERHAPS the biggest news in the North Gippsland league over the pre-season was the appointment of two-time Maffra premiership coach as Hayden Burgiel as Sale City.

One player Burgiel won’t have in his midfield is predecessor Joel Brayshaw, who has been cleared to Stratford.

Wooden spooner Boisdale-Briagolong has recruited defenders Matt Lee and Glenn Semmens from Maffra, but lost John Gooch and Josh Kennedy to Sale and Chris Bell to Gormandale.

A grand finalist Heyfield, clearances are pending for ruckman Brett Hudson from Sale and Owen Sim from Boisdale-Briagolong.

Rosedale has lost Brad Caldwell to Maffra and Chris Graham to Wyndhamvale in Melbourne.

Dale Fleming will be returning to Rosedale after a year at Traralgon.

Cowwarr has lost Tim Johnston and Jordan Bourke to Traralgon and Jordan Sandy to Gormandale.

Gormandale has lost forward Daniel Risol to Newborough.

Former captain Ryan Foat is back at Woodside from Maffra with former Eagle Jack Doderico also joining the Wildcats.

A clearance is still pending for Rob Michaelides to return to Morwell from Woodside.

A member of the 2013 NGFNL team of the year, Lachlan Little has left NGFNL premier Glengarry for Gippsland League premier Morwell.

Former Newborough coach Allan Chandler will take the reigns at Churchill.

East Gippsland

STRATFORD has gained the services of former Sale City coach Joel Brayshaw, but lost Tye Morrison to Sale.

Several EGFNL players have joined Bairnsdale’s list, but may still play in the district league.

Dylan Somerville to join Bairnsdale’s list from Wy Yung, Paynesville premiership player Damien Ashcroft has also signed on, while James Sanford and Tim Saunders have joined Lucknow.

Michael Delaney has left Lindenow to coach Orbost-Snowy Rovers.
