FIVE Wellington athletes have been selected in the state team to compete at the Australian junior championships to be held in Sydney this month.

Competing in the under 14 800 and 1500 metre events, Alyssa Waugh has come off a great season, winning gold medals in the 800m and 1500m at the state country championships and recently broke the under 13 and 14 state country 1000m record.

At the Victorian junior championships, Alyssa also recorded a national qualifying time in the 1500m event.

Kieran Hennig will compete in the under 14 800. He has been in good form with a recent personal best of 2:20.07 minutes for the 800m event at the Victorian junior championships.

Erika Allen is a promising middle distance runner who recently stepped up to the steeplechase and medalled at the Victorian junior championships. She will compete in the under 15 200m steeplechase.

Under 15 athlete Grace Walker represented Victoria at the Australian all schools in the long jump and looks to have a bright future.

Ryan Pedretti’s selection came after he medalled in the under 18 shot put at the state junior championships.

The Victorian junior track and field championships were held recently in Melbourne.

Other good performances from the Wellington Athletic Club came from the O’Brien sisters, Rachel in the high Jump and 400m, and Ellen, the 400m.

Millie Dunnett ran an impressive race in the under 15 2000m steeplechase and looks set for a good cross country season.
