Pumas prevail

THE Pakenham Pumas won the Gippsland Baseball Championships, hosted by the Sale Rangers at Stephenson Park, last weekend.

The Pumas defeated the Dandenong Angels 3-2 in Sunday’s final.

The Angels took the lead after scoring two runs in the third innings with strong hitting. Their defence was equally as good, keeping the Pumas scoreless for five innings.

In the sixth inning, the Pumas levelled the scores.

Outstanding defence from both teams kept the scores level until the final inning when the Pumas managed to score one run then shut the Angels out with great fielding to take the win.

The Rangers put in good showings during their four defeats against Melbourne opposition on Saturday before winning their final match against Morwell on Sunday. The Rangers finished ninth overall.

The event featured the five Latrobe Valley Baseball Association clubs as well as Pakenham, Mornington, Dingley, Dandenong and Berwick.

The teams played five matches each in the pre-season tournament.

The umpires voted Dingley’s Kynan Wilcox as the tournament’s most valuable player.

On Saturday night, Sale’s James Jackson won the home run derby.

THE LVBA season begins this Sunday with Sale heading to Traralgon to take on the Redsox.

The Churchill Braves will host defending champions the Moe-Newborough Dodgers, while the Morwell Cougars have the bye.

The Rangers’ first home game will be played on April 27 against Moe-Newborough.
