Netball rivalry renewed

SALE and Leongatha have developed a great netball rivalry, and that continued at the indoor centre at Leongatha on Saturday with the Magpies scoring a fighting five-goal win.

Saturday’s Gippsland League clash was the usually high standard fast moving clash, with Sale using nine players, making changes at the breaks to keep fresh legs on court.

Up by three at half-time, Sale edged ahead to lead 30-25 at the last change. In a high scoring last quarter, both teams scored 12 goals with the Magpies winning 42-37.

Kate Eddy and Mel Johnston were strong in defence, Tarryn Cunningham and Layla Simmons were good at wing defence while Lexie Joyce played well in the centre. Julie Gerrand and Tianna Hogan set up chances in wing attack while goal attack Lara Dunkley and goal shooter Fiona Vandersnoek shot well.

Maffra showed some fight in going down to fourth placed Bairnsdale 43-36.

The home sides won the remaining A grade games, Traralgon 50-34 against Wonthaggi, Drouin 46-44 against Morwell. Moe had the bye.
