MAFFRA put one hand on a Country Basketball League men's finals berth after defeating Sale on Saturday night.
Despite losing to Traralgon on Sunday, the Eagles are in fourth place on the ladder, five points clear of Moe in fifth.
The 102-96 loss to Maffra at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex hindered Sale's hopes of making the finals.
Little separated the local rivals in the match, but the Eagles scored 13 of the final 20 points to win by six.
Frazar Brouns scored 32 for the Eagles, Sam Whelan 28 and Cody Burgiel 18.
Billy Hughes scored 24 points for the Sonics, Rhys Carter, in his third game for the season, and Luke Williams both scored 19.
Williams scored 32 points and Hughes 23 as the Sonics defeated Lakes Entrance 89-74 at home on Sunday.
Maffra lost at Traralgon on Sunday. The Eagles led by seven points at half-time, but the T-Birds lifted their intensity in the second half to win 94-85.
Jarrod King-Church scored 25 points for the T-Birds, with support from Luis D'Angelso, who scored 22, and Christian D'Angelo, 19. For Maffra, Brouns netted 28 points, Whelan 22 and Blake Gallatly 19.
MAFFRA is in third place on the women's ladder, but may need to win at least one of its two matches this weekend, against top side Moe and fifth-placed Warragul, to make the finals.
On Saturday night, the Eagles defeated Sale 87-51. The visitors controlled the match after quarter-time, with their spread of scoring options, led by Emerson Connolly with 22 and Eliza Osborn 19, too much for the Sonics.
Kristy Glover top-scored for the Sonics with 22.
The Eagles then lost to Traralgon 88-40 on Sunday.
IN the final round of the regular season, Maffra's women and men will host Moe on Saturday night from 6pm and 8pm respectively. Sale will play at Traralgon in both the men's and women's.
On Sunday, the Maffra women will host Warragul from noon, before the Eagles' men take on Lakes Entrance from 2pm. Both Sale men's and women's sides will play at Moe.
