MOST stores in Gippsland Centre Sale are still open following the federal government's mishmash of directions that only those coming under the category of essential services stay open after midnight, Wednesday.

While food courts inside shopping centres that have them must close, take-away and delivery is allowed - giving a welcome reprieve for some businesses.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Tuesday night the stage two restrictions were be ramped up in the coming weeks or months.

Gippsland Centre will continue to open its doors for the time being, but the centre's Facebook pages statement says "we will continue to operate within government and relevant health authority's guidance as notified".

Target remained open on Wednesday, however, the coronavirus fallout may be the final straw in the coffin for the struggling retailer.

There has been industry speculation that it and the 280 Target stores around the country may close permanently, with the stores not being profitable for owner Wesfarmers for some time.
