AN inmate on remand at Fulham Correctional Centre has walked free from jail, only to be put back behind bars after handing himself in.
The inmate was set free last Tuesday by prison officers after the operator of the prison, GEO, was wrongly advised he was due for release.
The incident at the medium security prison has been blamed on human error.
Once Corrections Victoria became aware of the error, a warrant was issued and a spokesperson said the man was back in custody within hours.
The error in releasing the inmate was not made by GEO.
The prison's operator does not decide when prisoners are to be released.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said the department would review the circumstances of the incident and take any appropriate actions.
