THE East Gippsland Hockey Association junior season finally began on Saturday, the first of a shortened 10-round competition.

Maffra hosted Wellington at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex.

The under 11s game began the day in frosty conditions, but the two teams showed their steel to put on a great game.

First gamer Jesse Royes and Otto Humphris combined well with some brilliant team play down the right wing for Maffra, and Zoe Webber combined well with Sierra Roberts in defence.

The under 13s match was a fast-paced match which Wellington took out 3-2.

Wellington began the first half well and took a two-goal lead into the break via Jimmy Love. However Maffra fought back strongly in the second half with Jesse Lenehan and Kate Allen scoring to equalise.

Love added two more goals in the second half for Wellington, before Gretel Harms added a third for Maffra.

Maffra won the under 15s match 3-0.

Maffra played a solid game throughout, never looking in any trouble, with the goals coming through Hamish MacGregor, Daniel Neaves and Tristan Neaves.

Maffra took an early lead in the U18 game through Hayden Stewart, but Wellington soon scored two before half time through Rami Zafar.

Maffra continued to battle back after half-time, with Hamish MacGregor equalising. However Zafar immediately added his third to give Wellington a 3-2 win.

Sale had the bye.

This Saturday, Wellington will host Nagle at the GRSC before Sale takes on Maffra.
