Solariums should be banned

Five years ago, Victorian woman Clare Oliver died from preventable melanoma linked to solarium use, aged just 26.

Her illness shocked the community and served as a tragic reminder of just how dangerous these machines are.

While we have seen a reduction in the overall number of solariums in Victoria during the past few years thanks to more stringent legislation, the latest figures show that 133 solarium businesses still operate in Victoria.

Earlier this month SunSmart and 161 health experts joined forces to call for an outright ban solariums in Victoria, and nationally.

VicHealth supports this move, which has already been endorsed in New South Wales.

Solariums are unsafe and unnecessary and must be shut down before any more young lives are lost.
