Fait accomplis on planning amendments feared

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

IT is with profound disappointment that I read your headline article in the Gippsland Times (Threat to Sale wetland views).

Twenty-two years ago, following advice from council officers relating to the potential for development on the southern side of Stevens street, it was deemed most doubtful that subdivision would ever occur, because it was filled land, flood prone and critically zoned as farmland.

We decided in good faith to purchase our block and build.

Subsequent advice(once again from council) that following the purchase of this “farmland”, three subdivisions already existed for single dwellings to be constructed.

It is our understanding that these three subdivisions have been combined by the current owners into one and housing established.

The current owners entered into this land purchase with their eyes wide open as to the zoning regulations and should reconsider current thoughts.

I would ask the question of council as to the sense of further rezoning when currently large areas already exist for building.

Serious consideration should be made in this case, as we have here a pristine environmental habitat occupied throughout the year by many species of birdlife which no doubt would be detrimentally effected by this development.

This weekend I have noticed with some trepidation that fencing work has commenced defining the proposed areas to be subdivided, a “fait accomplis” ? I sincerely hope not!
