Maffra shines at state titles

MAFFRA Gymnastics Club is continuing to prove its ability to develop young talent.

Four members recently competed in the state championships at Geelong, with two winning gold medals.

They advanced to the state finals through hotly-contested qualifying events in October.

At the level seven championships, Leyla Berry won the vault with a perfect score.

The result was the pinnacle of the 14-year-old’s seven years in gymnastics.

“It didn’t feel like a perfect score, but I knew it was good,” Leyla said.

“It was good, it felt like all the hard work had paid off.”

Also in level seven, 14-year-old Jess Lang competed in the all around event, taking in the vault, parallel bars, beam and floor. On the bars, Jess won a bronze medal for finishing in third place.

Jess has been involved in gymnastics for seven years.

Ella McCubbin, 11, won gold in the vault at the level four championships.

Nine-year-old Katelyn Henderson competed in the level four all around, and finish fourth in the vault.

Achieving at a state level was the result of the hard work and dedication in training, and encouragement for them to continue progressing in the sport.

It was a successful year for the four girls, who occupied the top four places in the inaugural club championships.
