Wellington Shire Council is urging families, schools and businesses to safely dispose of recalled children’s kinetic sand products, which may contain asbestos, for no fee at Kilmany Transfer Station.
Domestic quantities of recalled sand can be disposed of at Kilmany, the municipality’s authorised asbestos disposal site, free of charge.
Residents have been advised to do not place these
products in kerbside bins, as they can pose a hazard to landfill staff.
The affected products were sold nationally between 2020 and 2025 through retailers including Officeworks, Kmart and Educational Colours. Refunds are being managed by these retailers after disposal.
Wellington Shire mayor Cindy Madeley said council wanted to make it as easy as possible for the community to do the right thing and protect their loved ones.
“Kilmany is the only waste facility in our shire that is licenced to accept domestic asbestos,” Cr Madeley said.
“While the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s official advice is that risk of airborne fibres is low, we urge people to stay safe and informed by keeping up to date via the ACCC website.”
To dispose of the sand, council advised an abundance of caution by wearing gloves and masks, using wet cloths to minimise dust and double-wrapping items in accordance with safe disposal guidelines.
