Help shape the future of rail trail

Wellington Shire Council is calling on members of the community to have their say on a draft master plan for Wellington’s section of the Great Southern Rail Trail, including the council-managed Tarra Trail.

With construction of the Alberton to Welshpool link now complete, the final Great Southern Rail Trail Master Plan will set a clear direction for how Wellington’s section of the trail can deliver a high-quality experience for users while supporting the region’s growing tourism economy.

Wellington Shire mayor Cindy Madeley said the Great Southern Rail Trail was one of the region’s most significant recreational and tourism assets and community input would be critical in shaping its future.

“The Great Southern Rail Trail is much more than a path. It’s a connection between our towns, landscapes and history, and a powerful driver for local businesses and visitor growth,” Cr Madeley said.

“This draft master plan is about listening to our community and working together to ensure the trail continues to meet local needs, celebrates what makes our region special and supports long-term economic and environmental sustainability.”

Following the delivery of the Tarra Trail between Port Albert and Yarram and recent investment connecting Alberton to Port Welshpool, the trail presents a significant opportunity for the local community to embrace cycle tourism and showcase everything the region has to offer.

The final master plan will guide future investment in council-managed sections of the trail to improve the user experience, attract more visitors and support the region as a tourism destination. It will also identify ways for community groups and local businesses in Yarram, Alberton and Port Albert to be involved and benefit from the trail.

Council will work with the community and businesses to plan for the trail’s future, balancing increased use with environmental care and long-term maintenance.

Council is inviting community members to review the draft master plan and provide feedback by completing the survey. The survey, which closes on Friday, May 8, can be found at your.wellington.vic.gov.au
