Wellington Shire Council is inviting residents, businesses, community groups and local organisations to have their say on three strategies that will help guide the future of Wellington Shire: the Economic Development Strategy 2027-2037, the Arts, Culture and Leisure Strategy 2027-2037 and the Community Infrastructure Strategy.

Called “Thriving Wellington”, the conversation is the next step in Future Wellington.

In 2024, more than 1700 people shared their ideas through Future Wellington, helping to shape the Community Vision and the Council Plan 2025-2029. The three strategies are being discussed together so people can have their say once, in one conversation.

To support community input, council has prepared discussion papers for the economy and for arts, culture and leisure. They cover topics including arts and culture, recreation, events, tourism, local business, investment, jobs and skills, and what makes Wellington a great place to live.

The papers draw on feedback, research, and early engagement with local businesses, organisations, industry representatives and the community. They outline council’s early thinking and are intended to be tested, challenged and built on by the community.

While each strategy focuses on different topics, all three recognise the important connection between strong communities, attractive places and a healthy local economy. Together, they will help guide council’s planning and investment for the next 10 years.

The Community Infrastructure Strategy is at an earlier stage. Council wants to understand how people use community buildings and spaces such as halls, community centres and sports grounds, what they need now and in the future, and where the gaps are.

A draft strategy will come back to the community in 2027.

Wellington Shire mayor Cindy Madeley said Thriving Wellington gave everyone a chance to help shape the next stage of planning for the shire’s future.

“We’ve heard from the community before about what is important in arts and culture in Wellington, and we value that feedback. These discussion papers build on what people have already told us, including through Future Wellington, while also looking at new opportunities and challenges facing our region,” she said.

“We’re inviting the community to help shape the next stage of this work so we can develop strategies that reflect local priorities and support a thriving community.

“Whether it’s arts and cultural experiences, recreation opportunities, local facilities, tourism or supporting local businesses, this feedback will help council understand where the community would like us to focus our efforts from 2027 to 2037.”

Community consultation for Thriving Wellington is open until Sunday, November 8.

Residents can have their say by reviewing the discussion papers and completing the survey through Your Wellington, Your Say – your.wellington.vic.gov.au – or by attending one of a series of pop-up engagement sessions across the municipality, where they can speak directly with council staff about the ideas outlined in the papers.

Session dates and locations will be announced on Your Wellington, Your Say.

Feedback received during the consultation period will help shape the draft strategies before they are presented to council for consideration.
