Young Blood
ART lovers arrived in droves for the launch of the Briagolong Art Gallery’s new exhibition ‘Young Blood’.
The launch took place last Saturday, with plenty of nibbles, wine, good company and art to experience in the heart of Briagolong on the corner of Avon and Forbes Streets.
‘Young Blood’ is a group of local young artists, who’ve formed an artistic alliance, bringing strength, support and organisation to their individual and unique arts practices.
This exhibition, focusing on the medium of printmaking, is the first expression of that collaboration.
The gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, with ‘Young Blood’ running until September 11.

Bond St poetry
MONTHLY poetry nights are back and better than ever at the Bond Street Event Centre.
These monthly poetry nights are popular with poets old and new, from first-time performers to seasoned writers.
Providing a great opportunity for budding poets to test their poetry on a friendly and supportive crowd, these nights also provide people who are new to poetry with valuable performance experience and the chance to meet with other like-minded people.
Anyone interested in poetry is invited to come along and be part of the supportive audience, or to bring their works and perform on-stage.
While originally scheduled for the third Thursday of the month, Bond Street Event Centre’s monthly poetry night has been rescheduled to the third Wednesday of every month, and the centre apologises for any inconvenience caused by this shift.
Poets old and new are encouraged to come along to the next Poetry Open Mic being hosted on Wednesday, August 17 at 7pm.
A $5 entry fee covers a light supper and supports the running of these monthly events.
For more information, please phone David at Bond Street Event Centre on 5182 8770.
Alpine walk
THE Annual Snow Shoe Shuffle on last Saturday, undertaken by Ben Crauchan Walking Club, saw an 11 kilometre loop completed, exploring around Mt St Gwinear and Mt St Phillack.
Nine walkers enjoyed a day of spectacular scenery, clear skies and great company.
After meeting at Erica, where snow shoes were hired, the group continued to St Gwinear carpark. Although the track was initially muddy with thin spattering of snow, the snow depth increased and soon snow shoes could be used.
At the summit of Mt St Gwinear, (1506 metres), morning tea was enjoyed, with thermoses providing a welcome hot cuppa.
The summit is marked by a cairn of rocks, and has views to Thompson Dam.
From there, it was down to the junction at Rock Shelter, before turning right and on to the Australia Alps Walking Track (AAWT).
Then, it was summiting Mt St Phillack (1556m). Located on the Baw Baw plateau, this is the highest point of that plateau.
With views obscured by thick snow gum, the decision was made to continue the short distance on to Mt St Phillack saddle, where the contented group dined under snow gums and clear skies, and took in views of the distant mountain range.
After lunch, it was back down the AAWT, before turning down a little known track, over a couple of gently flowing creeks, and then back to the St Gwinear carpark – and the donut van.
The walk featured picturesque scenery, thick stands of snow gum, fungus, lichen festooning branches and bird song, including a couple of active lyre birds.
All agreed the day had been spectacular, ably led by one of the many experienced bushwalkers in the club. One walker cited the many joys of being part of the club included getting to see places they wouldn’t usually go.
BCWC has regular walks and welcomes guest walkers, with the website having full details.
