WITH the days no longer tempered by wet weather, the Ben Cruachan Walking Club (BCWC) has enjoyed the exceptional natural landscapes that feature throughout the region.

Members herald from both East Gippsland and Wellington shires, and the club has a strong base of regular walkers. Guest walkers are very welcome.

Last Saturday, many BCWC members participated in the annual combined clubs walk, involving members of the Strzelecki Bushwalking Club and Friends of Tyers Park.

The Wirilda Walking Track, until the beginning of the pandemic, was Latrobe Valley’s best-kept secret. The June 2021 floods impacted the Tyers River bed and changed the ambience of the walk in places, providing more extensive views of the river. Two walks of varying distance and terrain were on offer, and comments from walkers were of the spectacular scenery, shared appreciation of the environment and the pleasant walking conditions.

Another much-anticipated walk is the Mt Worth State Park, scheduled for Sunday, November 20.

Located between Darnum and Leongatha, there is much to see in the park, including a huge mountain ash that is probably 300 years old, with a girth of about 14 metres.

From the start point at the picnic area, walkers will initially pass the site of the historic Maslin’s Mill, before following the Moonlight Creek Track, which meanders through an area peppered with tree ferns and tall mountain ash trees.

At the western end of the park, walkers will encounter a challenging climb before gradually descending and picking up the Waterfall Bower track, which has great photo opportunities.

All walks with BCWC are listed on their website, with information about distances and terrain, and now is a perfect time to explore— Gippsland on foot.
