Sale’s Jaxson Cornell has been eliminated from singing competition The Voice.

On Monday night, the fight to stay in the competition intensified as Australia’s newest vocal stars faced ‘The Callbacks’, with local busker Jaxson Cornell’s Miley Cyrus cover not enough for him to go to the next round.

Superstar coaches Jason Derulo, Rita Ora, Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy grouped their artists in trios to perform songs chosen by each coach. One artist from each trio went straight through to ‘The Battles’ round, one was given a lifeline – a final chance to wow their coach at the world-first ‘Ultimate Callbacks’ – and one artist exited the competition.

Guy’s first trio was tasked with classic Aretha Franklin songs. His second trio performed Miley Cyrus songs. Bella Mackenzie’s rendition of ‘Slide Away’ slid her straight into The Battles, Robbie Hunt’s take on ‘Wrecking Ball’ earnt a spot in Guy’s Ultimate Callbacks, while Jaxson Cornell ‘Flowers’ cover did not get him over the line. He left the competition as Guy said: “I’m so proud of you.”

A Sale resident and busker, Jaxson Cornell, 23, had progressed to The Callbacks round last month after his successful blind audition that saw him chosen by judge and coach Guy Sebastian. Before The Voice, you may have seen him performing in front of the Gippsland Centre (Coles side), the Clocktower, the Sale Chemist Warehouse, and the Sale Greyhounds Club.
