WELLINGTON Highway Patrol is pleading with drivers to stay safe on the road this festive season and arrive at their destinations safely.
Operation Roadwise was launched on Sunday and will run until January 3, with the focus on reducing the Victorian road toll.
Wellington Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Daniel Binotto said with the road toll projected to be higher this year than last, police would be doing their utmost to keep everyone safe.
There will be increased drug and alcohol testing throughout the Wellington police service area.
But Acting Sgt Binotto said it was up to drivers to help eliminate the fatal five driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, fatigue and improper use of seatbelts.
He encouraged motorists to travel smarter, not faster.
“As a whole, as a community, we can reduce the number of lives lost to zero,” he said.
“We’d rather people be spending time with their family around the Christmas tree than the hospital bed.”
Acting Sgt Binotto urged people travelling this festive season to plan their routes with rest breaks included, and reduce driver distractions.
