SRW looks at expanding irrigation areas

SOUTHERN Rural Water is examining opportunities to expand irrigated agriculture in the Latrobe, Thomson, Macalister and Avon catchments in central Gippsland.

The aim of the study is to consider projects that may promote regional development and boost employment for the region in the future.

According to SRW, a recent land capability and water resources assessment identified four areas of interest in central Gippsland for potential irrigation development.

These areas include the Latrobe River (Glengarry to Rosedale), Toongabbie (between the Macalister Irrigation District and Latrobe River focus area), the Avon River (Bushy Park to Llowalong) and Dutson (Longford to Dutson Downs).

RM Consulting Group is working with SRW to determine potential future demand for irrigation water in these areas.

Future agricultural irrigation demand is the focus of the study, but urban, environmental and industrial demands will also be considered.

Consultation activities will take place throughout late August and September, including information sessions, a telephone and online survey and industry meetings.

Existing landholders in the Latrobe River, Toongabbie, Avon River and Dutson areas, or those with an interest in possible future irrigated agriculture opportunities in central Gippsland, are encouraged to participate in the study.

To register interest, go to SVIDlink or phone Anna Kelliher from RM Consulting Group on 5441 4821.

The study is supported by funding from the Australian Government National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, an initiative of the Northern Australia and Agricultural Competitiveness White Papers.
