Prisoner dies after a fall

A MAN has died, after falling from a second storey at Fulham Correctional Centre on Wednesday.

Prison staff worked frantically to resuscitate the inmate in the centre’s recreation facility before paramedics arrived.

He was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he died soon afterwards. It is believed the man had been suffering from long term illness.

A statement from prison operator GEO Group said the company was proud of the way staff responded in such traumatic circumstances, and that counselling had been offered to those who witnessed the incident.

Wellington Criminal Investigation Unit is preparing a report for the coroner, and is not treating the death as suspicious.

For those experiencing difficulties, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or beyondblue on 1300 22 4636.
