Earthquake report in Mansfield area, not Heyfield

EARLIER reports of a magnitude three earthquake near Heyfield on Tuesday were revised to being near Mansfield.

Geoscience Australia’s website noted a magnitude 2.9 earthquake stuck at 6.20am about 20 kilometres east of Mansfield, at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

Alerts, including on the VicEmergency app, pointed to Heyfield as the original epicentre.

According to senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia, Professor Phil Cummins, a review of the data instead indicated Mansfield.

“The felt reports came in, we noticed it was pretty far away, then they looked at the data more carefully — sometimes they’re able to identify later wave arrivals,” he explained.

People in Heyfield may have felt minor tremors at the time.

No damage was reported.
