Car bursts into flames on highway

OCCUPANTS in a vehicle had a lucky escape on Monday after the SUV they were travelling in caught fire.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 10.40am on the Kilmany railway overpass, near Swamp Rd.

Wellington Police Service Area Inspector Craig Gaffee said the driver pulled over after noticing smoke, and soon afterwards the car burst into flames.

Police blocked the highway in both directions and diverted traffic around the scene for about 20 minutes while CFA members extibguised the fire.

Three family members escaped the SUV unharmed, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.
