ENVIRONMENT Protection Authority Victoria is currently investigating a chemical spill at the Longford gas plant.

The spill was confirmed in a statement via EPA Victoria’s official Twitter account over the weekend.

“Longford area communities may experience odour issues over the weekend following a chemical spill contained onsite at the Esso Longford plant,” the statement read.

“Esso has reported the spill to EPA. We are investigating.”

When asked for comment, a spokesperson for Esso Australia said that the odour was caused by a breakdown of glycol by bacteria in the onsite wastewater storage pond.

“We are working to rectify this issue as quickly as possible and whilst unpleasant, the odour is not hazardous and does not present an environmental or a health risk,” the spokesperson said.

“We expect the odour to recede over the next few days and eventually dissipate.

“Esso regrets any inconvenience that this may have caused the community. We are in regular dialogue with the EPA and our neighbours as we work to quickly resolve the issue.”
