VALENCIA Creek witnessed a grassfire on Sunday March 5, with over 100 emergency services personnel helping to contain it.

At approximately 2.20pm, smoke was spotted on a property within Valencia Creek at Mathers Rd. From then, it took about 10 minutes for the fire to move extremely quickly into grassland, becoming a threat to private assets.

150 first responders from the Country Fire Authority, Forest Fire Management Victoria, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, AusNet Services and concerned citizens all worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Helitack bombers were also utilised to subdue the flames.

By about 7.20pm, the grassfire was under control.

According to the Rosedale Fire Brigade, the fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike.

Valencia Creek CFA the following morning wrote on social media that they were very thankful to all those who assisted.

“We are so incredibly grateful for all the firefighters and responders that came from across Wellington and East Gippsland to help bring this fire under control,” the post read.

“This was a timely reminder that living where we do comes with bushfire risk.

“Just like yesterday it can be a matter of minutes before the fire can be threatening house [sic] and property.

“Please use this as a reminder to have your fire plan in place and home prepared.”
