MAJOR Road Projects Victoria Program Director, Brendan Pauwels said the Princes Highway East Upgrade has reached another significant milestone, with Melbourne-bound traffic set to switch onto sections of the new lanes between Velore and Maffra-Rosedale roads, including under the new Kilmany bridge.

“We’re making great progress on the Princes Highway East Upgrade with a major traffic switch underneath the Kilmany Rail Bridge taking place in March,” he said.

“This next switch will bring all Melbourne-bound traffic onto the newly built Princes Highway lanes and create safer access to Velore Road and the Kilmany Township.”

These are part of a series of staged traffic switches that will continue in 2024 as construction gets closer to completing the Princes Highway Upgrade.

Projects Victoria will remove detours and open all legs at the intersections of Sale-Toongabbie and Settlement roads, along with the intersection of Velore Rd which will with provide dedicated turning lanes for motorists to access the Kilmany service road, Kilmany Township and Kilmany Transfer Station.

The third and final stage of the Princes Highway East upgrade, which is due to be completed in 2024, will add an extra five kilometres of consistent two-lane highway, delivering a total of 43 kilometres of duplicated highway across the three stages of the project.

The new lanes will bring immediate safety improvements for up to 15,000 motorists who use this stretch of road every day, and improve journey times between Traralgon and Sale.

A range of safety improvements will be delivered including, wider shoulders and centre median with flexible safety barriers to improve safety by reducing the risk of run-off road and head-on crashes.

This stretch of road is also a gateway to a range of Gippsland tourist destinations including the snowfields and Gippsland Lakes, with the duplication set to make travel safer for day-trippers and holidaymakers.
