LETTER TO THE EDITOR
A COUCH was thrown over my fence with some great effort, I must say.
My concerns are not for one couch – they lie with council.
We receive no waste collection service or hard rubbish collection here in the rural farming area.
It costs us every time we go to the tip, and I hear another tip fee increase arrived on July 1.
There were two or three free tip tickets some years ago for all ratepayers, but no more, and charges just keep going up.
I would assume this is why we have illegal dumpers.
When I offered to throw the couch back over my fence, I was told I could then be charged with illegal dumping myself, which I consider to be totally outrageous.
I find it totally unacceptable this waste collection policy cannot be reviewed to also include illegal rubbish removal.
Is this not what we pay our rates for?
Editor’s note: Ratepayers in areas where council garbage pick-up services are provided, pay for these through a separate charge which appears on their rates notices. Council does not have a policy or budget resources to deal with illegally dumped rubbish on private land. Rubbish dumping should be reported to the EPA.
