Sale back on track

SECOND-placed Sale got back on track with a solid 10-0 win over Bairnsdale in East Gippsland women’s hockey.

Belinda Coulton, K. Hamilton and Prue McNaughton scored two goals each, while A. Andrews, Sarah Boag, A. Christie and Julieanne Nicholls added one each.

Third-placed Maffra maintained the pressure on Sale with a strong win over Wellington, 8-0.

Despite the scoreline, the Wellington team was impressive in defence with Annette Nico leading in goal.

Adelle O’Doherty scored a hat-trick for Maffra and Kate Steinmann and Jenna White added two goals each, while Emily Mogridge scored one.

In the closest match, Nagle consolidated fourth position with a 1-0 win over Orbost. Nagle’s goals was scored by former Orbost player Molly Coulton.

IN the open competition, Wellington and Maffra defied their lowly positions with an exciting 1-1 draw.

The match showcased many of the young players who had played out a draw in the under 18s earlier in the day. One of those players, Declan Jones, scored for Wellington to put the home team ahead at half-time.

Experienced Maffra player Mark Humphris replied in the second half to level the scores.

Fourth-placed Bairnsdale increased the gap to fifth-placed Sale with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Ricky Duncan and Darcy Simpson.

Oscar Crunden-Smith scored a hat-trick as Nagle passed Orbost into second position with a 3-0 victory.

SWAN Reach, ladder leader in both competitions, had the bye.

SATURDAY will be a round of local derbies with Swan Reach hosting Orbost, Sale traveling to Maffra, and Nagle at home against Bairnsdale. Wellington will have the bye.
