Premiers win

LEONGATHA began its Gippsland League football premiership defence with a 49-point victory over Wonthaggi on Good Friday.

Chris Dunne kicked five goals in the home side’s 17.7 (115) to 10.6 (66) win.

The Parrots led by 15 after a high scoring first quarter, in which 12 goals were kicked.

The margin was increased to 31 points after the Parrots booted four goals to one in the second term. It was a similar story in the third term, with the hosts heading into the fourth leading by 49 points.

Both sides kicked three goals in the final quarter.

Tom Marriott and Josh Hopkins led a dominant Leongatha midfield, Josh Schelling was strong in a defence which allowed on five goals after quarter-time, while Dylan Garnham combined well with Dunne in the forward line, kicking three goals.

Defender Aiden Lindsay was the Power’s best player.

WARRAGUL thumped Morwell by 60 points at home, also on Friday.

Leading by just three points at quarter-time, the Gulls kicked eight goals to one in the second term and booted three unanswered majors in the third on their way to a 13.16 (94) to 4.10 (34) victory.

Jake Horstman set-up play for the Gulls onballers Kim Drew and Nate Paredes with his ruck work, with Traralgon recruit Luke Di Ciero kicking five goals.

With plenty to do, Kane Grinstead-Jones and Anthony Rosato played well in defence for the Tigers.

ROUND one will continue on Saturday with Moe hosting Drouin before Bairnsdale takes on Traralgon in a twilight fixture. On Sunday, Maffra will head to Sale.
