Summer Cup celebration

LOCAL trainer Jenny Gieschen had reason to celebrate recently, when her huge outsider Valencia Gem won the Summer Cup final at Sale Greyhound Club.

The three-year-old jumped well and held on in a frantic finish to win the 520 metre race on Boxing Day, keeping the short priced favourite Seal The Deal at bay.

In a star-studded field, the win was made even more remarkable by the fact it was given little to no chance of wining by bookmakers, who listed it at $42.20 for a win.

Gieschen had another runner in the same race, with Kingfisher Rose making up the front half of competitors and coming a creditable fifth.

Gieschen said heading into the race she thought her eventual winner may have just sheltered a path for Kingfisher Rose.

“You just hope they do well, the two were side by side but Valencia jumped clear and got home,” she said.

“It was great being a local trainer to win on home soil.”

The victory took Valencia Gem’s tally to 11 wins and was surprisingly not the biggest upset of her career, with the speedster winning at Sandown previously at odds of 50-1.
