FEMALE football was celebrated on Sunday at the Boisdale Recreation Reserve.
Mother’s Day marked the start of the season for the Boisdale-Briagolong and Sale women’s teams, as well as the Boisdale-Briagolong and Sale City youth girls.
Before the women’s match, Boisdale-Briagolong finally got the chance to unfurl the AFL Gippsland Women’s premiership flag they won in 2019.
The day was also significant for the Sale Football-Netball Club, whose women’s team was making its debut.
The Magpies stood up to the challenge of playing a side which hasn’t lost a match in its two seasons of existence, and included a player with AFLW experience, Sarah Jolly, but the experience of the Bombers shone through.
The Bombers won by 40 points, 8.14 (62) to 3.4 (22).
Sarah Elson, Sarah Madden and Ashley Jans were the Bombers’ best players, with Emily Porter kicking three goals, including two in the first quarter.
Best for the Magpies was Ashlee Sciortino, who kicked two of the side’s three goals. Mea Perkins and Emily Odgen also made good contributions.
Earlier in the day, Sale City defeated Boisdale-Briagolong in the youth girls’ match.
This Sunday, Sale will play its first home game against Foster, while Boisdale-Briagolong will head to Lindenow South.
