Cross country girls seek glory

Four Wellington Athletic Club athletes, Maddie Buhagiar, Grace Graafsma, Ada Hill and Debbie Husodo, have qualified for this year’s Australian Cross Country Championships to be held in Adelaide.

Grace Graafsma will headline the squad, after taking home the silver medal in the recent Victorian Under 14 Schools Cross Country Championship.

Grace who represented Victoria on the track in the 800 metre and 1500m earlier this year, will look to continue her run of form after claiming a win and two second placings on the Athletics Victoria Cross Country calendar.

Debbie Husodo will represent Victoria for the second time on the cross country course after placing fifth in the Under 18 Victorian Championship.

In Debbie’s previous appearance she placed 16th at the 2019 Australian Cross Country Championship.

Maddie Buhagiar (12-years-old) and Ada Hill (Under 18) will represent Victoria for the first time after finishing fifth and10th in their respective ages.

Lara Smyth (Under 16) 13th and Elly Fleming (Under 17) 14th had their best performances at a Victorian XC Championship and were nominated as reserve athletes for Victoria.

The Wellington Athletic Club also recently placed fourth in the Victorian Under 16 Girls Road Relay Championship at Sandown Park, with a team consisting of Tillie Buhagiar, Mia Calleja and Emily Kanavan.
