Maffra will face ladder leaders Leongatha in tomorrow’s Gippsland League C Grade netball Grand Final, and it’s expected to be one hell of a fight.
Heading into tomorrow’s game as Maffra’s only senior team to make a Grand Final and as minor premiers, there is considerable weight on the Eagles’ shoulders.
The girls from Maffra radiated a quiet confidence as they prepared for training on Tuesday night.
The Eagles’ quiet confidence may reflect Maffra’s cool, calm and collected first-year C Grade coach, Megan Madden.
“Being a previous player, I am probably not as nervous as other first-year coaches,” Madden said.
“There are definitely nerves amongst the team, especially our first Grand Final players, but it helps to settle the nerves to know we have so many reliable players across the court.”
Madden is preparing her team for a tough game, having lost two of their past three games to Leongatha by short margins.
“It will be a really competitive game, and I think it will go down to who can get their shots in on the day,” Madden said.
“I will be very proud of the girls if they can get it across the line.”
With a completely new team, playing their first game together in Round 1, Madden has certainly excelled in her position as coach, forming a strong side whose on-court collaboration looks far from new.
“It is completely different from previous years’ teams, but we have such a great mix of ages and talent,” Madden said.
All eyes will be on Maffra’s goal shooters, Hannah Stubb and Zara Flynn.
“They are very accurate goal shooters and are great at rebounding shots against tough defenders,” Madden said. “Both (Stubb and Flynn) are reliable shots.”
Maffra will seek strength in the midcourt from the Eagles centre, Bree Burgil and wing attack, Maddy Davis, who Madden says are “extremely determined players”.
In their defensive end, the Eagles consistently perform well under pressure, which Maffra is sure to rely heavily on, as Leongatha’s tall goal shooter took out the GFNL’s best and fairest.
“We will be looking to keep on top of her early on in the match,” Madden said. “If we can play our game as a team, back each other up across every third, I’d say we are in for a good chance.
It will definitely come down to the line, and I think it will be a really good match.” .
Having won the past two Gippsland League Grand Finals, can the Eagles take home the 2022 premiership flag and make it three in a row? Place your bets.
