Sale Sonics competed in the Morwell Basketball Tournament last weekend, the first of the new season.

Sale Sonics 14.1 Boys have started the season in hot form, graduating to the A Grade grand final, overpowering Traralgon by 20 points in the semi-final, but fell short in the grand final, defeated by the boys from Warragul.

The Sonics Under 10 Boys also made it to the grand final, many playing in their first ever tournament.

Maffra under 12.1 boys faced Warragul in their first game on Saturday, defeating them in a close 23 to 20 game.

After overpowering Sale in their second game, 38 to 18, they took the court against Traralgon in their final match of the day, going down 34 to 15.

Sunday morning, the boys defeated Moe 37-21. Placing second on the ladder, they secured a spot in the grand final against ladder leaders Traralgon.

The boys put up an awesome fight and came away runners-up for the weekend.

The final score was Traralgon 31, Maffra 18.

Maffra Under 12.2 team started their first game against a solid Traralgon team; they fought all game but just slipped away at the end.

Building on positives from the first game, the boys were ready to go again and put together a great team performance in the next two games, taking out wins against Lakes Entrance and Sale.

Heading into Sunday, Maffra faced Morwell first up. It was a hard-fought match, and scores were close throughout the game.

After timeout and words from coach Steve about settling down and focusing on what had been worked on at training, the Maffra U12.2 boys took control of the game and cemented themselves a spot in the semi-finals.

The boys went toe-to-toe with another strong Traralgon team. The pressure was high, and the boys handled it well.

Unfortunately, Traralgon was too strong, but Maffra fought until the end.

The team’s development from the game was amazing, slowly building more confidence and improving as a team. Coaches Steve and Morgs could not be prouder of the group.

Maffra Under 14 Girls had a great start to the tournament series, making it through to the semi-finals.

The girl’s first game started with a 37 to 21 win against Sale.

Foster was next, going down 22 to 35 in a challenging game.

Maffra Under 14 Girls had an impressive win against Bairnsale in their final game on Saturday, overthrowing their opponents 46 to 6.

On Sunday, Maffra faced Traralgon, going down 36-5.

Maffra was nervous as they headed into the semi-finals against Foster. They played their hearts out but ultimately fell short, going down 30-13.
