Sale Sonics are preparing for a big day of basketball tomorrow as they host a one-off basketball exhibition event, taking on Sydney Athletic Basketball at the Gippsland Regional Sporting Complex.
Sale will front three teams, two men’s teams and one women’s team, with the first men’s game starting at 1pm, the women’s game at 2pm and the final men’s game at 3pm.
Captain of Country Basketball League’s Sale Sonics, Josh Backway, hopes the event will draw attention to regional senior basketball.
“Around the Queen’s Birthday weekend, there was a basketball tournament in Melbourne; I took the team down, and we played against the Sydney team,” Backway said.
“There was meant to be a tournament in Melbourne this weekend but it got cancelled and the Sydney team asked around if anyone wanted to play.
“We were keen; instead of going all the way to Melbourne and playing in an empty stadium, we decided to host it here in front of a home crowd.
“It is free entry to come watch the games. There will be raffles; you can buy tickets with a gold coin donation. We are organising a three-point and half-court shoot-out to get kids involved throughout the day.
“We are hoping to draw attention to regional senior basketball, bring in juniors and give them something to strive for.”
Join supporters tomorrow, Saturday, December 10, to cheer on basketballers from Sale Sonics, joined by players from surrounding local teams, as they take on Sydney Athletic Basketball for the first-ever interstate exhibition basketball event at the GRSC.
