Sale-Maffra Cricket Association was well-represented in Gippsland Pride on Sunday.
The SMCA had four players make-up the team for the Round 2 clash in the Under 16 Youth Premier League.
The representation was well-spread, with Sam Anderson (Collegians), Harry Tatterson (Stratford), Ashton Wright (Rosedale-Kilmany) and Hayden Wrigglesworth (Bundalaguah) taking part.
Collegians senior player Charlie Morrison was also on hand to lend his expertise, while former AFL coach Guy McKenna watched on.
McKenna has made the move from football to cricket since his time at Gold Coast Suns ended, and is now a coach and talent specialist with Cricket Victoria.
Playing South East Sharks at Ted Summerton Reserve, Moe, the home side bowled first after losing the toss.
Playing on a very good wicket with a smooth outfield, Gippsland did well to keep their opponents under 200 – a commendable effort given the match was played with ‘chicks boundaries’ – the same that were used for the recent WBBL match.
South East closed at 8/192 from their allotted 50 overs.
Wright bowled 10 overs of what looked like fast leg breaks, and was also busy in the field, effecting three run outs.
His work in the ring, especially late, was of note, as he threw down the stumps twice with direct hits.
Tatterson did a good job containing while the field was spread, and returned tidy figures of 1/22 off five.
Wrigglesworth bent his back on an unresponsive surface, bowling one of only two maidens for the innings.
The young quick made sure no balls were hit in front of the wicket in his last over, bowling a few halfway down the pitch.
Pride established a solid base in reply, getting to 48 without loss.
Wrigglesworth missed out with the bat, but Anderson batted for most of the innings, and ended with a mature 88 from 79 balls in a knock that included 14 fours.
Batting at first drop, Anderson batted with four partners, including Wright, who saw the side over the line with an unbeaten 19 from 25 balls.
Pride got the required total in the 44th over, winning by four wickets.
The win took Pride’s record to 1-1.
Their next match is on Monday (December 12).
