Max Reeves will challenge rival Mark Smith for the Victorian Light Heavyweight Title on Saturday, March 25, at the Gippsland Regional Sporting Complex in Sale.
Mad Max Reeves defeated opponent Leo Grant by TKO (technical knockout) in Round 1 of Wildfighter Round 8 at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex six months ago. Three months later, the Stratford local floored opponent Robin Hazelman in just over a minute at the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre, adding a consecutive Round 1 knockout to his career record.
Can Reeves do it again when Wildfighter returns to Sale in March for Wildfighter Unfinished Business?
Ten weeks out, Stratford’s superstar boxer is auspicious.
“I’m feeling pretty confident,” Reeves said.
“I am glad I get another shot as it’s the only blemish on my record, so it will be great to sort that out.”
Reeves and trainer Paul ‘Turk’ Carrol have been keeping a close eye on Smith in preparation for the rematch.
“I got a good look at him last time, the way he fights, what he does wrong,” Reeves said.
“I watched him recently, and he fights the same style each time, so we kind of know what is coming towards us.”
Stepping up a weight to fight Smith for the Victorian Light Heavyweight Title, Reeves will be looking to drop three kilograms before March 25, compared to his standard six to eight kilograms when fighting Super Middleweight.
“I only got back into training last week,” Reeves said.
“So I’ve got 10 weeks to work off all the food I ate over the summer.
“[Smith] is a seasoned vet, he has had a fair few fights, so I will be really focusing on getting super-fit.”
Reeves has a lot to fight for this March in Wildfighter Unfinished Business with the Victorian Light Heavyweight Title, with the chance to clean up his career sheet on the line.
“It would mean a lot [to win the Victorian Light Heavyweight Title] because the last time I fought him was for a belt as well, which got cut short because I broke my nose, so it would be nice to bring something home to remember,” Reeves said.
Having fought seven bouts since his professional debut in December 2019, Reeves remains undefeated.
Smith has won six, lost six, and drawn four of his 16 fights since making his professional debut in October 2014.
Smith may have Reeves beat on experience, but history shows the local boxer thrives in the ring in front of a home crowd.
“I am always excited to fight in Sale,” Reeves said.
“Last time was awesome; walking out into a crowd of people you know makes you feel on top of the world.”
Fighting in front of a home crowd with two consecutive Round 1 knockouts under his belt, can Reeves do it again when Wildfighter returns to Sale on Saturday, March 25, for Wildfighter Unfinished Business? Only time will tell.
