A GRASS which fire broke out Tuesday afternoon on a property on the outskirts of Sale demonstrates the danger of a nearby bridge being closed to traffic, according to three local residents.
The fire broke out near the corner of Stephenson St and Maxfields Rd in Sale, near Brady’s Bridge.
Fire trucks were sent to the corner of Lacey St and Maxfields Rd, but had to turn around as the bridge was closed.
One truck went straight down the South Gippsland Highway to Stephenson St.
The fire was extinguished, and no one was hurt.
The bridge was closed to traffic 12 years ago, and in December, council moved to replace the deteriorating 100-year-old structure with a pedestrian-only bridge.
The owners of the property, Meryl Edwards and Trevor Tucker, were at the Wellington Shire Council offices at the time, ironically to again implore council to reopen Brady’s Bridge to vehicles.
